I just purchased the American Telecom Digital Cordless Phone RA218 with Handset Answering Machine and 3 other cordless handsets to go with it. I have called for help to 3 different techinical people...they even had me return the base once and more or less said they had never heard of this problem and I should just return the system. I would really like to keep it as it has all the functions I need.
Problem is that I have no dial tone to call out and it reads no line. Yet! I can receive calls and the answering machine picks up! I have plugged and un plugged and moved it to different phone jacks.

Have you tried using a different line cord to connect the base to the phone jack?
I have the RA218 and the same problem as described. Furthermore, this is the replacement phone I got from the company (I tried the line cord suggested by CR but still the same problem).

I could use mine for a while, then it stopped working. I have to switch to use pulse dial now. I do not know how long it can last in this mode, though. May be you can try yours as well.
I just encountered the same problem as sl1111. Tone mode doesn't seem to work but pulse does. I hope someone can figure out a solution soon, rather than having to send it back.
Has anyone found the solution to the "no line" error? I tried contacting American Telecom by email (no reply) and phone (dumped into general voice mail) without success.
