Hi all, new to the forum and the world of lcd tvs. Long story short, I'm in the market for a new tv. Until today I had been completely decided on the 52' Sony Bravia XBR4. This was based on a few things: 1) I've been a Sony fan for sometime and have never had a problem with their products 2)this particular set has the features I want in the price I was willing to spend 3) Consumer reports has rated the Sony Bravia line # 1 in both 52" and 47" lcds in their most recent review. Now then, today I decided to go around to a few of my local tv repair shops. I found some of these folks to be more knowledgable than others as one might expect. Of 5 repair shops I soke to today all 5 told me to stay far and clear away from SONY!!! I was devestated. The reasons they gave varied slightly but all shared the thought that Sony's service is horendous. 1 of the shops no longer repairs Sony sets because of a Sony restructuring that took their license away, the other 4 however refuse to service Sony sets. By the...

I just wondering if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to start a classified section strictly for electronics on this site? I don't know if there is anyone else out there trying to repair electronic items and is having problems finding parts etc. It could just be an area where members could post components or partial boards sections of appliances etc. and members could respond with the parts they had. This idea would definitely need some fine tuning but it is just a suggestion.

KLV-40U100M Sony Monitor

Hi, I bought this discontinued Sony Bravia Monitor, which means it has no tuner. You change channels through the cable box. I've seen people post on sites that they had trouble w/the board in it somewhere around 1 year of ownership. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it a rumor? It's making me consider buying an extended warranty which I would never do otherwise always thinking what I buy is well research and a good product. In this case, I went to the store w/another tv in mind and got switched into one I hadn't researched. Thanks for any input. -Capri

Microsoft Grocery Cart

Now this is technology you can use! Microsoft and MediaCart Holdings Inc have combined both their genius and their lust forinternet-based digital advertising revenue (especially since Microsoft acquired aQuantive, a $6 online ad firm) to bring us a screen that mounts to the front of your grocery cart, and streams ads from the Internet. This is the bad news. The good news is that you can evidently log into this puppy from home, upload your grocery list, then swipe your card on the cart when you grab it and it will not only show you your list but help you find your items (via RFID ). Of course, this comes at the additional cost of big brother's watching your every move, tracking shopping patterns, etc. Your cart will now even keep a running tally of your total, etc, as long as you scan your items as you put them in the cart. How far can we really be at this point from eliminating the checkout lines all together? ShopRite supermarkets on the East Coast will be the test market for the latest in my-shopping-cart-needs-a-firmware-update technology in late 2008.

TECHNOLOGY'S IMPACT ON EMERGING ECONOMIES AND THE YEAR'S HOTTEST GADGETS HIGHLIGHT DAY THREE OF THE 2008 INTERNATIONAL CES Inaugural Technology and Emerging Countries Program Featured His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda and One Laptop Per Child's Nicholas Negroponte Arlington, Va., January 10, 2008 – Technology's impact on emerging countries and predictions for the year’s hottest gadgets were the focus of day three at the 2008 International CES®.
BugLabs: Build Your Own Gadget?

So, I'm curious... Do you see yourself building your own gadget? Have you heard of BugLabs ? Neither had I until CES 2008. The Bug Labs "platform" is evidently the "legos of high tech gadgets" - allowing you to start with a control "brick" (called the "Bug Base"), and plug in extensions to create various kinds of gadets. Available extensions include cameras, large screen, usb keyboard, motion detector, GPS device, accelerometer, and on and on. So new and innovative and different was it that it even walked away with an award from CNET . The platform is militantly open source (not just the software, but the hardware as well, so you can build your own extensions), highly versatile, pretty expensive ($350ish for the base, and $100 per extension), and seems targetted at the serious gadget geek. What do you think? Would it work for you? For all of you who loved legos, would you love this too? And if you're drooling, then you can even get an early adopter discount! So, who's hosting the next BOYG (build your own gadget) party? Also, check out this video from the CNET Stage .

I have a Mitsubishi WT-46809 HD ready 1080i, with a 2-1 fault code that I have been told is an x-ray protect mode, and this problem could be the high voltage circuit, the horizontal sweep or drive circuit, bad capacitors in the power supply or the sweep supply, or the regulation in the main power supply. The TV just went off like it was turned off and now the green power light just comes on and goes off after a second we try to turn it back on. I cannot find any information on this and wanted to know if any one had anything that might help me figure this out. I have tried to leave it unplugged and then try and get the same results. The TV is about 5 years old but has had no problems. It is an awesome tv. Thanks for your time

I just thought I would write an article about the televisions of today, you have projection lcd, dlp, plasma, and lcd flat panels, and your good old crt (tube televisions). My comments may seem like I am resisting change, on the contrary I like the new display systems coming out, but as a technician this is how I see the new technologies. I am not going to talk about how good the resolution is or how good the black level is. I am sure there is a salesman and a dozen articles out there that can offer this information to you in very exciting ways, and new jargon that they will teach you in order to make it sound new and exciting. These things are only important to get you to purchase the television. The part that is usually left out is the part I deal with on a daily basis; the actual experience with the television. A television’s reliability and durability are more important in the long run, unless you are of the nature to replace your television frequently. But most of us want a tv that will last for many years, Trouble free. This observation is from a...

High-def video on cell phones? Yeah right!

According to TechWorld.com , " Broadcom has created a multimedia processor it said can put high-definition video, 3D gaming and 12-megapixel camera capabilities on mobile phones". My thought: "Yeah, right!" Don't get me wrong, I'd love for my cell phone to have a night high-res camera (I'd settle for 6 megapixels over the current 1.2; don't really need 12), and I'm all over high-definition video. But I have to say I'm skeptical that such technology will be available any time soon. And even if it is, adding a $5,000 chip (my crazy estimate) to your cell phone will definitely not drive up sales numbers. Then there's the size, and the heat, and the gamma radiation... okay, maybe not that bad. I can totally hear them saying, "We've got this cool chip, and you can now do all this nifty stuff on your cell phone, but your phone is now 2"x3"x5", will burn your hand to touch it, and gives you hip cancern in 10 years." Anyway, rant over... What do *you* think? You buy it?

New Verizon Voyager - Competition for the iPhone?

The New York Times writes today that Verizon has announced it's new high-end smartphone, the Voyager , made by LG. Has anyone heard anything more about it? Anyone thinking about getting one? It's got the large touchscreen going on, and claims to support higher-speed Internet connectivity than the iPhone, but I somehow imagine the interface won't compete with Apple's. Anyway, anyone got any predictions to make?

Progressive spirit, or appointed to guard the past?

WIRED recently interviewed Amar Bose, founder of Bose Corporation, about his dream "to replicate, as clearly as possible, the sound of live music through technology." What caught my eye about this article was a quote that's evidently engraved on a plaque outside Bose's office ... "At every crossroad on the road that leads to the future, each progressive spirit is opposed by a thousand men appointed to guard the past." So, my question... Which one are you? Not necessarily when it comes to music or Bose speakers or necessarily anything else specific, but in general... Are you a progressive spirit (early adopter, always wanting to move forward, dreaming about the future) or appointed to guard the past?

Will DVD kiosks take off?

This seems like a bit of a goofy idea to me ... with all the possibilities out there for online video and video on demand , but whatever turns your crank, I guess. Anyway, looks like recent copyright law changes have taken us one step closer to DVD kiosks ... that will burn you a copy of the DVD you order right there on the spot. Sounds like a great candidate for a pyramid scheme. (Earn $5k / month at home!!!) Thoughts?
