Ditch Your Landline and Save Some Cash With VoIP: Skype, Ooma, and MagicJack

Question: cptdano from the forums asks: &quot; We have done away with land lines in our house. Do you have any ideas of another way we might accomplish something similar?&quot; Answer: The country is in a recession, and your cellphone bills are high enough. The last thing you or anyone else needs is yet another outrageous telephone bill, but your local cable and telephone companies keep on pressuring you to sign up for their included landline service. Landline telephone service does have its advantages, including clarity of transmission and always-on service, but there are a number of solutions from various providers that offer voice telephone services over the Internet for a fraction of the price. Are you ready to cut the cord? Take a look at these three solutions. (Before we begin, all of these solutions require a high-speed Internet connection.) Skype: A Solid, Well-Known VoIP Provider If you're not familiar with the term, &quot;VoIP&quot; stands for &quot;Voice over Internet Protocol&quot; and is exactly what you might assume - telephone service over the Internet instead of over a landline. Skype , an eBay company based out of Luxembourg, has been providing service to users worldwide for quite some time, and has...

Magic Jack, Not So Magical - TechLore Member Review

<img align="right" hspace="10" src="http://www.techlore.com/imagelib/contentitem/25792/f0f219158e118e83--7a7e706b-120d8cf2646--3492707114329.jpg">There is a new device being advertised all over the US right now called &quot;the Magic Jack,&quot; a private voice over IP (VoIP) solution allowing you to use a high-speed Internet connection to make and receive calls instead of traditional land-line service. It said in their TV ads there was a nominal fee of $39.95 to purchase the Magic Jack, which included a $9.95 fee for the first year of service. After the first year it would cost me an additional $9.95 per year, and there's a five year special available for $59.95. After paying AT&amp;T a little over 65 bucks per month for my local and long distance service, that sounded GREAT! I just had to check this out! So I ordered one, and 5 days later it showed up in my mailbox. Setting up the Magic Jack was pretty straightforward. Simply plug it into an open USB Port, then plug a telephone into the port on the Magic Jack. I gave it a few minutes to load the setup, and during the process was given the option to designate my home state. A list of available area codes appeared, and after selecting one, as given a telephone number....

Big Mystery...Phone won't ring

I'm having problem with my cordless phone that's driving me crazy, and I wondered whether any of the smart folks on this forum can help me solve it (or refer me elsewhere). I have a 5.8 GHz digital cordless phone at my home that has an answering machine as well as multiple handsets (Panasonic model KX-TG5664). Sometime during the past week or two, this phone just stopped receiving calls. It neither rings, nor does the answering machine kick in. For example, if I call this home phone from my cell phone, I can hear the line ringing in my cell phone speaker. I do know, however, that the cordless phone works and the phone line isn't dead. That's because I can make any calls I want *from* my home phone to the outside world. The only problem is receiving calls. My first instinct is to think there's something amiss with the phone line. However, I tested the phone line with a brand new super-cheapo...
