For consumer displays, the Aviaand Digital Video Essentials
discs contain a variety of patterns for television displays. I don't recommend downloading test images off the web; many are either totally inaccurate or designed for use with a specific type of material. In most cases, using incorrect test patterns is worse than not using them at all.
Thanks for the info Matt. I want to check my raster alignment and possibly adjust if needed. Back in the day I used to have a small, hand held generator that produced color bars and a crosshatch I think. I beleive it was powered by a 9V battery. I have no idea where it's at nowadays. Do you know of any kits that can be built that would give me what I need?
With test pattern DVDs that turn any DVD player into a decent generator (for cheap) like the ones I mentioned above, I'm not sure I would say building your own generator is practical. That said, it could be a fun DIY project. IF you're into that kind of stuff, why not? :-)
Here's a few links to get you going. If you do build one, I'd love to see a thread or article on what you did to make it with lots of pictures!
Matt, thanks for the links. While looking at these I had an idea. Couldn't I get a test pattern card and put it on the screen with a camcorder? If I frame it up properly shouldn't that work?

I've never tried that approach, so I can't vouch for how accurate that would be. You could certainly give it a try. :-)
