Hi, I have a dell desktop that is about 4 years old and my son crashed it about 2 years ago. Ever since then I have been using my HP laptop as a desktop. At the end of last year I reinstalled windows using an HP Windows Disc so it works as an HP operating system. The thing is there is a virus and my computer is very slow so I want to crash it and then reinstall windows using the original dell disc.

HELP!!!!

If you have the original Dell discs, refreshing your desktop should not be a problem at all. Just try booting up the computer with the disc in the drive, and it's possible the computer may boot from it without any trouble, and from there you can reinstall Windows.

If it doesn't boot from the CD automatically, you may have to hit a key upon startup, which is usually the DEL key. If that doesn't work, consult your computer's user manual to find which key it is that you have to press to get the system to boot from CD. Beyond that, it should be smooth sailing for you.

As far as virus and anti-spyware goes, one solution are the products offered by AVG, which have worked well for many people - they offer a free version of their antivirus software. This or any other anti-virus program will help you avoid infection and keep your computer running strong. I wouldn't ever operate a Windows PC without some protection against viruses and spyware.

When you attempt to startup the computer, you need to hit either the F1 key or the Del key. Alternate between the two hiting them every 1/2 second or so. The macnine should come up in the "SETUP" mode. wander through the menues to find the "boot sequence" section and change that to look at the CD first rather than the hard drive. That should allow you to use the original Dell discs.

On Dell PCs, pressing F2 will get you into System Setup. Pressing F12 during the post should give you a menu that will allow you to boot from the CD drive via a selection.
