If you got the stuck tape out, I'd try to grab a blank tape and give it a spin through the VCR. At least if it eats the blank, you're not losing anything.

Did you give it a try with a blank? Did it eat that tape too?

Please provide the make and model.  There are a number of reasons for the problem you describe. With the make and model will at least give me a clue on how to help.

The most common problem with these is that the tape loading arm gets stuck.  Although Sony insists that they do not lubricate the arm, the grease gumms up and causes the arm to freeze.  Usually the first symptom is that tapes no longer play correctly or at all.  If you open the unit and look on the right hand side near the pinch roller, you should see an arm that would pull the tape up to the pinch roller assembly.  This is the one that sticks.  Attempting to move it, should be difficult but possible.  If this is the case, remove it, keeping count of the number of turns on the cap nut as this nut also places the arm height.  Once removed, clean it with a degreaser and clean the post.  Reassemble and the unit should work properly.

Dan   is there a  way to see  what each of these pieces  look  like so i dont make  a mistake.  You said to look  near the  pinch roller  and i dont  exactly know  what that  looks  like.

also would a  degreasser be  alachol  or  wd40

thank you  so much  I  am sure i can do  it and you made it sound  really  easy  thank youKiss the way you explained  it seems to me  that  the  gunk  would  be  easy to  see  is that right

like when I have to clean  my mouse for the   computer.

thank you so much my  son  came over and  fixed  the  vcr according to  your  directions.  he said  you made it  easy as pie

I didnt  think it could really be fixed  I have another  vcr that  has  snow  all over the tapes i have tried different  tapes and  they  all  get  snow.  Can you please help me with this  also

thankkkkkkkk  you  evCool

Wel, the problem with the snow is a set of clogged heads.  Try a cleaning tape that uses a liquid.  If that doesn't work.  Use a scratch tape (blank) and press play.  Then press fast forward so that if it had a program on it it would be in speed mode.  Run this for a while and try a regular tape.  Keep us posted.
