Evidently, the EU brought the hammer down on Microsoft a second time today as their appeal of the landmark antitrust case was overturned.  Microsoft will now have to fork over $613M AND give trade secrets to competitors AND distribute Windows without Media Player (in much the same way in XP SP2 they introduced the ability to extract IE from the O/S).

Two things...

  1. Wow!
  2. Ouch!
I know it's trendy to hate the big player on the street lately, but I kinda feel sorry for them.

In a recent speech by Apple, they noted that iTunes had some 600+ million downloads, and Firefox accounts for nearly 30% of the browser market. I don't really think Media Player is holding consumers back from finding alternative media suites. It's being proven that when consumers aren't happy with one of Microsoft's bundled programs, they seek alternatives.

The EU is barking up the wrong tree IMO.

I think you're missing the "it's trendy / cool to hate Microsoft" boat.  I've never seen the draw, but so many seem to enjoy it.
