Personally, I'd really prefer it if touch-screen phones didn't become the norm, or if they did they also had a tactile keyboard component (that is attached!) as well. I go to school in upstate NY, so things like the iPhone will become a huge hassle once the cold weather hits. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of taking my gloves off in -30 degree weather in the middle of the winter to make a phone call. Since the touch screen doesn't read through a glove (I've tested it!) I think people are going to learn the hard way that though it's a really awesome interface and the novelty of the new interaction is wonderful, its practicality is questionable. I'm personally a huge fan of my Blackberry Curve. It does everything I need it to and has a proper keyboard that I can dial without the risk of frostbite. I set a rule for myself: I won't buy an iPhone until at least the 2nd generation and until they're at least 20GB. By that time, I"ll hopefully be living in sunny California. If I had to recommend a smart phone to someone - I'd go with the Blackberry or the Treo. If you absolutely need some sort of non-keyboard-centric input, go for the Treo. Simple.
