We've had this tv for less than a year (RCA 27in Flat Screen behemouth), not sure if we had a warranty placed on it or not (in case you ask) and the other day while watching broadcast television, the entire screen went green on all channels. Tried using the vcr, dvd and game systems also and the picture is still green.

What could have caused this and how should I go about fixing the problem?

Is it a regular direct veiw tube set, and LCD, a plasma, a DLP type set? Is it a projection type set?  A chassis number as well as a model number would help alot.

I was hoping you'd be the one to help.

Well, its a regular HUGE box, but flat screen, RCA 27 inch, this is whats on the label behind it, took me a few minutes to move it, way too heavy for its worth haha

Model# 32V432T

Serial# F445CC03N

Chasis #M134C

Thats a 32 inch TV set, but the model sounds like a GE model but of course Thomson corp owns bothe RCA as well as the GE product lines.  Is this a US model?   As I do not see the model number on my RCA list.

Ok, I guess it is, as you live in the states.  Now I see why the model number and the RCA brand, Wal-Mart.  Is the picture all green with small white lines in it, or is there a picture and you see things, its just that everything has a green tint to it?  Is there any other colors you can see such as a little bit of red or blue coloring?

the entire screen is green, since we do not have cable or dish, we have the traditional bunny ear syndrome of white lines anyway or dots, thats normal though..........but being green isnt.

i've tried unplugging it and replugging it, to see if that would help but I guess thats just a bad idea. Nothing changes, and no, no other colors appear but green.

Ok, worse case, the picture tube could be bad,but it could be a few things other then that as well.  it could be a bad connection on the CRT(picture tube) board.  Most of the time the socket has a bad connection or is not seated all the way onto the neck of the picture tube.   It could aslo be a problem in the RGB drive circuitry. if thats the case ior if the picture tube is bad, most likly it will not pay to have someone look at it.  Check the warranty as some peeps give a 2 to three year picture tube warranty.  if not, you will have to decide if its worth lugging into a shop and paying a diagnostic fee to repair, as I would not recomend anyone opening this set if they do not have any TV repair experience.  it could, like I said, be a minor, or a major problem.  Anyway good luck and please let us know your progress on this repair.

Thank you for all your help and yes, I will let you know what happens after checking out a few possibilities.

Some of these newer RCA's have had issues with both the crt socket going bad and also a 18k 2 watt resistor on the crt socket board feeding 180v. to the green drive transistor.  It could also be the CRT as well.  At the very least, you're still in the  parts warranty.

I was able to FINALLY get through to someone that could help me at RCA thompson. I am still under warranty and they are having someone come fix the tv sometime in the near future, just have to wait until the shop that they picked, decides to accept RCA's terms. I'm not about to have them charge me $125 for less than 30 minutes of work, which they tried to push over on me even though I was told that nothing would come out of pocket on my end.

joannab, I am so glad you checked, as alot of times people do not and they get racked over the coals.  You sound like your not going to tolerate that type of treatment.  Please let us know how you made out, as maybe it will help someone else in your shoes.

Update on the tv nightmare, well after over a week of calling the service center only to be put on hold forever and they never return, I called back RCA Thompson to complain about the 1 and only service center here in town. Come to find out, the first person at RCA who handled my case, LIED. The warranty for parts is still in effect but not the service call, labor or anything else the idiot decides to charge me (like his lunch).....the total cost for this fool to come look inside my tv and grunt something in a language not from our planet, will be over a $100 more than I paid for the thing in the first place. Gonna buy a new tv, this was all a waste of time and effort on my part. Hope no one else is going through this too, I feel for ya. Thank you all for any and all help you tried to give but this was a hopeless case to begin with unless your tv dies within the 90 day warranty (this is coming from the RCA guys)

December 15, 2006 6:15 AM

The industry standard warranty for years has been 90 days on labor, 1 year parts, 2 years on the CRT.  A $100 service call is also not unusual. Welcome to the world of disposable consumer electronics.

December 15, 2006 8:41 AM

In the good old days, an American made Zenith or RCA TV set used to have a labor warranty of one year.  And if there was a known problem, they fixed it, just like the old safty capacitor on the zenith sets that used to go bad and a high voltage spike would arch through the deflection yolk and snap the picture tube.  I must have repaired hundreds if not thousands of those sets, IN THE HOME!  In todays world, with all of the disposable electronics, manufacturers do not care how long something last.

Thanks to my husband going off on the RCA guys, they put him through to customer relations and now they are going to deal with the service repair shop that is giving me the runaround and for my troubles? They are paying for all of it! All it took was to get mad enough to call the better business bureau and consumer reports. Oh and found out that the tv was bought earlier than I thought, its only 6 months old. Guess RCA didnt want the public to know that their product turns to crap within 6 months. Its turning out to be a colorful christmas after all, there's just so much "green" a person can take. Merry christmas guys!
