Engadget has video of a 'Treo 670' running Windows Mobile.

There have been rumors that Palm may move away from the PalmSource OSs (there are several), but this is still surprising.

What do you think, is a Windows Mobile Treo compelling?

Doing a quick inventory of the palm apps I use on the Treo 650 and can't say that I will miss anything if I switched to WinMob. But given that I have already had the Mac-endectomy I am not sure there is anything compelling about having a windows-compatible smartphone either.

We have already sung the praises of the phone itself and assuming all the same (or more) features are going to be available in a Windows version (camera, web browser, full email client, etc.), what do you find particurly interesting about the Microsoft version?

The best mobile chess games are Palm-coded. Mapopolis is Palm only, I think, and it's killer. Vindigo might be Palm-only, too. The code is tighter, too, owing to the hordes of Motorola maestros who formed the current base of apps that others build upon (I should know, I've written a few).

Having said all that, I sold my Sony Clie TJ35 and scored an Axim 50v.

The problem with the Palm is that the OS is showing serious signs of age. It does not handle multitasking well, and it lags behind in multimedia features. Palm source seems to be flailing between the next version (Cobalt or Garnet, can't remember), and a Linux port.

The Palm Treo 700 is going to ship running Windows Mobile 5.0, which is a huge boost for Microsoft.

Do you feel this is a good or bad move, why? does this signal the end of the Palm OS as we know it?

If Palm itself is abandoning the Palm OS, seems as if it is more than a sign of the end :-)

Palm OS in its current incarnation was going to be abandoned anyway. The software company (Palm Soft?) was working on both a linux version as well as a new version of Palm OS. I'm not sure if either of these are going to move foward now after the aquisition, but regardless Palm devices were going to move on from the current Palm OS anyway.

All I remember about my last WinMob device (and it's been a while) is that it had NO battery life. Hope that's improved, since I'd love to see my next cell phone purchase be a Treo (or equivalent).

I am not sure PalmOne/Palm/whatever is going to have the best Windows Mobile smartphone. I'm hearing good things about Motorola's Q and these phones from HTC.

Rumors are also swirling that there will be a Symbian OS version of the Treo.

'Good Things'? Care to elaborate? What about them would be better than the Treo?
