hi, i searched the site but couldn't find something that answered my question. i have a 27" samsung CRT tv. about a week ago i was watching TV, then the screen went entire black except for a horizontal line straight across the middle of the TV. The line was about 1cm thick, and when i changed the channel, you could see a change in the line...almost as if the picture was only coming through that 1cm line. (I could also still hear the sound) but after about 20 seconds the TV shuts itself off. now it's starting to get more and more frequent.

is there anything I can do, or should i call a TV repair shop...and if you know what this problem is about how much will it cost to repair?

thanks

Dan, sorry that you haven't yet received the answer that you are looking for and are disappointed.

However, in our defense, in just a few months of existence, we have already answered directly well over 100 personalized questions ("Ask The Experts") from the community as well as numerous questions in the forums at no cost to our community members.

While we are working feverishly to build up the community, we realize that it is going to take time, and not everyone will be answered in a timely manner. Our hope is that people such as yourself can be patient with us as we try to get as many questions answered as we can with very limited resources.

That being said, while your question is a good one, your specific problem is probably best answered by a TV repair shop or the manufacturer.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out so that you can help the next person that has the problem.

I see your post is a little old, but to ans. your question this is a vertical problem. The vertical output ic is probably bad (shorted). So the set will power on but then built-in protection shuts the set off.

did you ever find out what the problem was? I am having the same one.

Yes, you guessed it. I have a 1991 with the same thin line problem. Any suggestions or should I take it out back and shoot it?

While shooting the TV may release some agressions, it really won't fix the problem...

You have a problem with the vertical circuit.  Usually this is either the vertical Ic having bad connections or being defective.  Try resoldering the connections first.  If that does not resolve the problem, replace the chip.  The vertical IC is a small flat IC attached to a heat sink with about 9 pins or so.  It may be an LA7838 or something similar.

Keep us posted.

For a 1991 set, 17 years old, there are probably dried capacitors in the vertical circuit as well.
