RCA TV PROBLEMS

My 36" TV model F36649 purchased in 11/2002 has started displaying the menu and guide any time it wants to. The sound comes and goes. The remote doesn't help. The buttons on front of TV work different options that what you select. For example, the chanel up button turns the tv on, the menu button will bring up the tv guide. I can't make the guide go away long enough to change the channel. If the guide does go away, when you touch any button, it comes back or the menu comes on and mutes the sound. It is very frustrating. Before taking to service center, does anybody know of a fix at home? Is there a solution?
Thanks

That is a really weird issue.

That is a really weird issue. Either it has totally gone cooky, or the TV has a factory demo mode that got enabled. Check your TVs manual to see if this is the case.

Before I call a repair man, does anyone have
any suggestions on what to check.
I don't have a high voltage probe, but I guues
I should get one and start there, but if it looks
like something simple to anyone, I would apreciate the input.

I have about the same problem

I have about the same problem with my RCA 36 inch model F36668. I can switch on the TV by the remote control or by pressing the On button on the TV but when I try to change the channel or touch any of the buttons on the remote control or on the TV, the screen goes blank.
Then to get the picture back I have to press the On/Off switch on the remote or on the TV again (sometimes twice or three times) and the picture comes back on the same channel that I was on or if I had pressed the channel forward buton - before the screen went blank - then picture will come on the next channel. The picture is perfect otherwise. This means (I assume) the remote is activating the TV but something else is causing the screen to go blank everytime I try to change the channel or try to increase/decrease the volume or for that matter anytime I press any button. Is there any relay inside the TV that can cause this or is the IR sensor on the TV bad? I tried using a different universal remote control but have the same problem and so I am assuming it is not the remote. Is there any kind of a lock on the TV and if so, how do I reset to the original setting. Is there any 800 number where we can ask RCA for tech help?
Would appreciate if someone could help.

Well, I gave up on my TV

Well, I gave up on my TV fixing itself. We loaded it into the truck today and it will go to the shop tomorrow. I will let ya'll know what they say the problem was and the cost. Of course, when I turned it on today, it worked pefectly. It is definitely an intermitten problem, so may take them awhile to locate the problem.
Later.

I hate to break it to you

I hate to break it to you guys, but RCA Sets have a VERY common history of Microprocessor related problems. First it was the "T.O.B." or "tuner on board" problems that were related to breaks in the data ground structure, that also happened to be the tuner shield. Despite phasing out this in most of their later models (quite possibly due to the class action suit), I'm still seeing sets with bad designs, and bad processors. And since the processor controls all the functions, as well as the adjustment parameters, anything is possible when these develop "electronic alzhiemers". In many of these cases the microprocessor must be replaced, along with the EEPROM memory chip. Most have an upgrade/modification kit that includes componets that must be changed or added to solve this problem. Score another strike or Thompson!

My tv is back home and

My tv is back home and working great, again. The tech said some of the controls were bleeding over....whatever that means. He changed 5 switches for 3.25 each and charged a total of 116.99 to fix the tv. That is cheaper than buying a new tv, since I have only had this one less than 3 years and it probably has an on time of less than one a year old.

- RCA ColorTrak Plus-27"-No

- RCA ColorTrak Plus-27"-No channels below 51' I woke up from a nap yesterday and found that I could no longer get channel "line in thru 50". When I went into the set up menue I tried auto and manule programing, they all seem to be "enabled". It seems like it must be a hard ware problem to me. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks Martian

RCA Entertainment Series Model#F25649, size don't matter. I was out rootin, and there it was. Thought to myself, check out that sweet T.V. So i grabbed the dam thing, why not? Get it home, wipe it down, it's looking better as we go. Well, brothers and sisters how many times have we heard that old saying? It don't matter how looks on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts. Plugged it in? Yep, shot down! The F*&&^$%#%&^*& thing won't turn on! Any ideas? Or should i just go for skit shooting? Peace ROZEE

I have an RCA TV DVD VCR

I have an RCA TV DVD VCR combo B27TF680 just over 3 yrs. old. The screen went black but I have sound. I have unplugged it for a day and plugged it back in to "reset" but nothing happened. If the picture tube went bad already does anyone know how much it costs to fix?

janed
I don't know what is wrong

I don't know what is wrong with your t.v., but I do know it is not the picture tube. When a picture tube goes out, it slowly gets darker and you can't adjust or if only one color gun goes out, the color will be off and you can't adjust. Labor cost is usually about 89.95 plus parts. If it is picked up, you have an extra charge. If they come to fix it in your home and can't (and they won't) there's a p/u charge. You should check out prices on a new one and then decide. Repair will be at least $150.00. Just my opinion here from past experience. Hope this helps.

I have just purchases and RCA

I have just purchases and RCA 32" digital television, model number 32v434tyx5. Every time I turn it off for a long period of time, I have to press the down volume button on the television and the clear button on the remote at the same time for five to ten seconds to get it to turn back on. Does anyone know why this happens, and how can I get it to stop? I would like to simply turn my television back on by pressing the power button on the remote.
Please help. I really don't want to pack it back up and bring it back to the store if it's an easy fix. I've read through the entire manual and it says nothing in there about why it does this or how to get it to stop doing this, but it does to pess these two buttons if you have a problem turning your television on.
Thank you!!!!

It sounds like the set has a

It sounds like the set has a reset problem with the brain or microprocessor in the tv set There is no easy fix that I know of,so if this set is new I would take it back ASAP, so you dont get stuck with a set thats new, and has a problem.  As it is new Im thinking maybe a firmware problem with the Micro?. Good Luck

But janed this is a new set!

But janed this is a new set!  Yes there have been past problems on an RCA sets and most of the time the repair person resolders all the grounds around the OBT(On Board Tuner) and the sheilds and say they do something else as RCA say this should'nt cost over 50 to 75 bucks and is a way for the shop to pad the bill. Im not saying all shops do that as we never did but I,ve seen alot of bills and saw what was done to sets. Innocent

Dynahog,

I had to take into the shop. The buttons on the front were replaced. Labor and parts were about $105.00. I never used the buttons, only the remote, so I guess the sensors on them.....technical suff, but has worked fine for 9 mos.

I have a rca projection tv

I have a rca projection tv model p56720lv that the picture went out in.  For a few days it would come in and out and then suddenly went out and won't come back.  Does anyone know if this is the picture tube.  It is a projection and none of the lights will go on and the tubes don't light up.  I have power and static sound but nothing else.  Before it went out it had a humming sound coming from the left back side.  I have had to have the board sautered before.  Could this be the same problem or a new one.  Help

I have a RCA home theater

I have a RCA home theater late 1990s 60 inch. I have had some work done a few years ago and it worked great but now I am having a problem where the menu pops up for no reason the set will then not respond to the remote or front panel controls. It would not turn off so I pulled the plug And now it will not turn back on. I have had some minor work just done to the set it cost $100, the tech said he had to retrace some of the lines on a circuit board but, it worked for them, I brought it home and it worked for an hour and the problem came back. I am wondering does anyone think it may be the microprocessor and how much that would cost. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes Larry Kelly, alot of

Yes Larry Kelly, alot of problems do come back to the switches that control the volume up and down and as well as the channels, but with the knowlege I have collected through out the years of TV and wide screen repairs, I have to say, Not all that seems likly is the problem?  No not with a bunch of differant things that I have seen in the past few years alone!!  I have seen problems such as this to be the remote sensor assy, also in maggy sets as well as Sylvania sets, to be a bad painter IC they call it (we techs call it a Microprocessor IC).  Also  Many repeated bad solder connections, and  the repeated falure of the regulator IC.  I wish i could guess on many of these repairs but Im sorry as the best I can do is guess for you, so you may have a standing stone on what a tech may tell you.  Im hoping that this will awaken most to ask whats happining with there repairs.  good Luck,  and Oh report back to us please on what you had done or had to do to ghet your set repaired.

Hey there DeniseRCA just

Hey there DeniseRCA just expereinced what I percieved was a lockout on front panel as well. I thankfully am anal and always spend the few bucks for extended warranty. A technician will be coming to my home Mon Dec 11 so if your problem has not resolved hang on and I will post results. In the mean time you may try unlocking the parental set up on the front panel. If you take your remote and point it at the the TV and push the volume down button on the TV front panel simultaneously with the clear button on your remote it should unlock the front panel control. However, it didn't work for me and I have the original remote. Can you hear the hum of electrical contact from within the tv? Unplugging the TV for a few minutes is supposed to fix any issue that may have resulted from a power surge.(many sets have a protection built in). I hear the hum! I have followed the tooth fairy down the RCA path of troubleshooting and read many boards but wasn't successful finding a fix at all. I am glad for the extended.

Larry Dillon
Extended warrantys are good

Extended warrantys are good on alot of things.  Have you seen this article we have here?  http://www.techlore.com/article/14812/Extended-Warranties---Do-I-Really-Need-One-/  There are alot more cool and neat articles to read  just about anything electronic.
