Sony kp51ws520 hdtv error codes

I have a sony kp51ws520.  I am getting nine blinks on the error code.  I have had several people come look at it.  I am getting so many different responses from so many different people.  I have a friend who said he would repair it for me if I could diagnos the problem.  I have tried putting it in service mode, when it comes on, I get alot of zeros and ones.  I have a bet going with my husband, that I can get it fixed before he can, come on guys, help me here.  thanxs:)

There are a couple little

There are a couple little diodes on the G board most likely causing the problem. Sorry, I don't have the ref #'s but there aren't many parts on that board to begin with.

It's the board on the far left.

Ok MotvGUY is correct about

Ok MotvGUY is correct about the G board being bad.  The G board part number is A-1054-157-A.  My supplyers say this board is no longer available from Sony, BUT wait!  I did find rebuilt boards available at a place called PTS electronics.  They are located HERE, and the phone number is 1-800-844-7871.  You can call them and give them the part number you need and they can help you.  Also if you are going to go into the service menu, please write down anything you change as you might need it later if something messes up/  Also you should really have the complete service manual if you are going into the service menu, I happen to have a copy if you wish to have it, I will be happy to share it with you if you leave an e-mail address so i can send it.  This file is huge so I have to use pando to send it as my mail service cannot.  Before you download the manual go to pando.com for a free download and pando only opens when you try to send large files.  Now there is a possibility that this will not fix the set, as no one can really tell for sure if diagnoising it this way.  Good Luck with this repair, and keep us informed of the progress with this contest.

Larry can you send a service manual

pnjkimbro,  have you resolved

pnjkimbro,  have you resolved the problem on your sony kp51ws520 yet?  If so, was the problem on the G board like MotvGUY suggested?

I am working on an identical set at present with about the same symptoms. However, I only have a raster for a few seconds before the set shuts back down so the only error codes I can see are the red LED flashes from the front panel.

I'll let you know what I find when I find it!

Larry Dillon
DAVE IRE, how many times does

DAVE IRE, how many times does the light flash?  The first few pages of your service manual has the codes and what they mean.

Dave IRE
Larry Dillon,

Larry Dillon,

Thanks for the inquiry;  for some reason I could not access this forum yesterday and so could not respond to your question.  The LED flashes exactly 10 times, and I gather from the service manual that this indicates trouble in the horizontal flyback circuit.  Since I do get a raster for a few seconds, I cannot say for sure that the HV xfmr or it's driving semiconductors are for sure bad.  One clue is that the projection tubes output gets momentarily brighter just prior to shutdown.  Maybe the B+ supply is running too high, triggering the shutdown circuit?  Anyone have case history on this symptom?  I hate to shotgun the circuit as Sony parts can be pricey..

Your thoughts?

Check and monitor the power

Check and monitor the power supply voltage, make sure it is steady before it goes off. I have seen these voltages start to go up amd down a bit, mostly with scene changes before it shuts down.  Could also be in the HIgh Voltage regulation.

Hello

Hello

I have the same problem with my set with 9 blinks and I was wondering if someone can tell me where to find these two diodes.

thanks

Nine blinks - Replace D 6116
  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negative).  The G board part number is A-1054-157-A.  My suppliers say this board is no longer available from Sony, BUT wait!  I did find rebuilt boards available at a place called PTS electronics.  The phone number is 1-800-844-7871 Good Luck and let us know how you made out with this repair.  Oh by the way, here are the diode part numbers and generic part numbers, and they can be purchased at www.partstore.com

    Update to my last post:

    Update to my last post:

Noticed the blue tube was the tube which brightened just b/4 the set kicks out, so I disconnected the driver board from the socket of this tube and refired the set. this time the high voltage stayed on and the red & green tubes lit and stayed on.  The blue tube had a bad spot on the phosphor already, so a new driver board and tube has been ordered.

    Larry,

    Larry,

Well, the set is back together and operational again.  Nice bright picture.  I figured that for the low cost of the driver board, I would change it anyway, since I didn't really know whether it had a problem or not.  I am not used to CRTs that have an internal problem of excessive or uncontrollable cathode current but maybe this is not too unusual for this particular tube.

A really scary scenario with this set would be a problem on the signal board and the prospect of either buying a replacement for big bucks or trying to replace one of those ICs. (shudder)

Anyway, all's well that ends well!!

    I debated creating a new

I debated creating a new thread since my model is slightly different, but it seems like this might still be a good place to bring it up. I have a model KDP-51WS550 that is on the fritz. Upon power up, I hear sound but see no picture. After 15 seconds, it powers down and I get one of two blinking codes. Most of the time I get 5 repeating flashes. Occasionally I get 10 repeating flashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a copy of the service manual to send me, that would be great too.

I have found this online as an explanation for 5 blinking lights:

Diagnosis: White balance failure (Not balanced) Possible causes: Video out (IC7101, 7201, 7301) is faulty (CR, CG, CB board), CRT drive (IC309) is faulty (A board), G2 is improperly adjusted. Symptoms of the problem: No raster is generated, CRT cathode current detection reference pulse output is small.

But I haven't found anything for the ten lights (and I am not talking about the 10 or so flashes you see when you initially turn on the set).

My problem is that I am three hours away from an authorized service center and this set is already the size of my Wrangler. If I can fix it, I want to do so.

    THANKS!

    Larry,

    Larry,

    How do I replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board?

    Thanks

Dave, great to hear!  I know

Dave, great to hear!  I know this is a scary thing, as those tubes have around 32,000 volts on them. Not a place to be experimenting around in. Good Luck

    Larry Dillon
    Sonygirl, these diodes are

Sonygirl, these diodes are soldered into the printed circuit board and is  or should not be attempted unless you have some printed circuit board experience. Not only could you tear up the printed circuit board, you could get seriously hurt if not killed by experimenting around inside of a TV set. Please seek the assistance of a pro or at least someone who knows how to work on TV sets. Good Luck

    Larry,MotvGuy, and all who

Larry,MotvGuy, and all who helped.  This is Jennifer, the one who originally started this thread.  All you guys have been fabulous.  I did some studying, figured it out, took the g board out, found the diodes, took it to a tv repair man, told him what I needed done, he did it and might I add was impressed I knew what I was talking about, and only charged me fifty bucks for the part and to put in the diodes.  It fixed the problem and I won the bet.  My husband thought it was some big thing.  I think I actually got some respect out of him now.  I also found out that the particular diodes that were originally put in this model set are faulty.  Sony has tweaked the problem, renamed the diodes under another part number.  I don't have the updated number, but could get it if anyone needs it.  Ive got a big head now.  I want to fix my dishwasher.  Thanks so much.

    Larry Dillon
    Jennifer, I am glad you

Jennifer, I am glad you repaired the TV set. Here is a little tidbit I left in another thread abd then i will make this as the answer that fixed your set as well. Thanks for the kind words. :>)  The D6301 has a Sony part number as 6-500-567-21 with the generic number being, 10ERB20-TB5, and the D6116 has a Sony number of 8-719-081-97, but that number is no longer available from Sony . Sony does however have a direct replacement for the D6116 diode. The new part number is 8-719-074-43, and the generic part number for D6116 is BAS316-115. Remember, do not get cheap and only replace one at a time as re soldering will give you the symptom that the set is repaired, but you will be in the same boat week or two down the road. I have just given you all the right info you will need to successfully repair your TV set. Now it is up to you if you will use it properly.  Good Luck.

Larry, Is there any way you could send that Manual to me as well ( [email protected] ). I am getting 10 blinks on start up, followed with 9 blinks, and it continues to cycle 9 blinks. I am assuming that I have the G-board problem (it seems that this is an issue with these models). I have contacted PTS and they will rebuild my board for $135.00. I would like to make sure this is my issue first though. Thank you in advance.

All the manual will tell you

All the manual will tell you is that a 9 blink is a zero crossing error. it does not tell you how to fix this problem . There is no test for it either, i went through this with sony before when initally trobleshooting this issue. The diodes will even check good.  the ten blinks before is not a code, it is just telling you it is trying to start up, only after that startup notifacation is when you get the code. Replacing these diodes will fix most of thes tv's with this problem.

Larry, that "G" board is a little bit of nothing(if it is the one I am thinking of), it has a transformer on it and about a dozen or so components. You could replace all the components on that board for less than 50 bucks probably.

Jlaudz,  Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board and do not attempt to resolder them as this will fix the problem only temporary.  The G board part has the part  number of A-1054-157-A.  My suppliers say this board is no longer available from Sony, BUT wait!  I did find rebuilt boards available at a place called PTS electronics. They cost about 135 bucks though. The phone number is 1-800-844-7871  If you can solder and work on solid state circuit boards, you can locate BOTH diodes on the "G" board and replace BOTH at the same time. i will send you out the service manual. Good Luck and let us know how you made out with this repair.  Oh by the way, here are the diode part numbers and generic part numbers, and they can be purchased at www.partstore.com
