So here is my problem:

So here is my problem:

I have a 53" Sony XBR, KP53XBR35. I have the same convergence errors as everyone else has been posting here. After reading a few pages of comments, i am assuming the ICs need to be replaced. I have seen price quotes from $450 to $650...is it really that expensive?

Also, I have a 32" Sony Bravia, KE32TS2U. The power board blew in the back, and I sent it in for repairs, but they have not given me an estimate yet. Any idea what that will cost to repair? Is there a strong chance there is another board that may now have issues (since it was the power board)? The problem with the TV is that I have sound, and no picture.

 Thanks!

Larry, I have the exact same

Larry, I have the exact same problem as describbed by Levick.  The tv started flashing between color and b/w when on tuner.  So, without hesitation I switched to the video input instead and it seems to be fine with one exception.  VIDEO continually blinks in the top right of the screen about every 10 seconds. Can it be turned off?

I have a Sony 32" KV-32S20,

I have a Sony 32" KV-32S20, about 10 years old. A few days I noticed dim green horizontal lines across the screen along with the normal picture and yesterday when watching color went very dull, with lot of shadows and then no video at all, although the sound was there. This unit was repaired about 3 yrs ago for similar problem, they replaced one of the main IC (chip). At that time I was told the picture tube is getting weak, so the colors were like original any more. I left the unit off for quite some time yesterday. After turing it on the video flashed a few times and then eventually became steady, but picture is very dull, it has more of the blue color now and very bright. The picture looks quite washed out. I tried lowering the brightness, contract, color and sharness; the picture is now some but viewable, but still quite dull and heavy on the blue color.

Larry is it worth repairing, do you think it is the same IC and/or other parts. Can the tube be re-juvinated. I have a friend who will be able to replace the IC, if I know what and where to get it from.

Thanks for your help!

Larry Dillon
Your problem is a weak

Your problem is a weak picture tube, or you have a low voltage on the picture tube. You can certainly try and have the picture tube rejuvinated but there is never a warranty on this as a matter of fact it can kill the tube altogether. i have seen rejuvinated tubes go on to last a few years and seen them last a few minutes. You just cannot tell. At this point though, a 10 year old TV set In my opinion, this set would not be worth sinking any cash into it. Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

Thanks very much for quick

Thanks very much for quick response. Sounds like no point repairing the tube and replacement will be to expensive. Is there any point getting the IC replaced.

Thanks.

I would not invest anything

I would not invest anything into this set with a weak tube.

Larry, I have the similar problem with my sony KP-57WS510, we noticed a "sparky" sound coming every 5 minutes from back of the TV yesterday, and today when we were a show the TV turned off, now when we try to turn it on the standaby light blinks 7 times, the is no picture but sound is okay, the tv turns off and the stand by light blinks another 3 times. Sound like it is a common problem with Sony TVs. Is it fixable do-it-yourself, or do I need a pro to look at?

Thanks

fixy, Three blinks - B+ over

fixy, Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.   Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.  OVP means Over Voltage Protection.  The High voltage could be too high because of the Over voltage condidtion. There could be a problem in the "G" board.  Check all of the diodes for leakage.  Good Luck, and let us know if you fix your set and what you found.

i am seeing a lot of posts

i am seeing a lot of posts here about the sony widescreen projection tv. mine is the kp57ws510. I bought it in july of 04. I have been waiting for 2 weeks for the sony repair man to get back to me...i finally  called him today and he tells me he can not buy the 'board' needed to fix the convergence problem anymore. Any suggestions and what can i expect to happen now. This stupid thing cost $2000. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK WITH SONY helping with cost or replacement????

I have never had to replace a

I have never had to replace a Sony convergence board, Why cant he simply repair it. It is only going to take a couple of IC's and maybe a few resistors. Maybe even a Circuit Protector or two. Good Luck and let us know how you make out with your TV set,

I have a Sony KP53XBR35 and it has a similar problem that just started. The right 1/4 right side of the picture shows either blue or yellow ghosting. However, I turn on the TV today and the picture is fine. I checked the convergence when the problem was happening and it was fine, that is a white plus and all RGB aligned.  The ghosting is the only problem, it does NOT have any bending or curves to the ghosting and sometimes it does also appear on the left side of the screen on occasion as well as the right.  But Center always seems fine.

I assume since this is on and off problem, that probably means its the ICs going due to heating or power flux issue. What are your thoughts?

Also what do these 2 ICs and fuses generally cost? And if the board can be removed from the TV does anyone rebuild them and what will that run?

healy55 said: Hello I have a convergence problem with a Sony kp-53xbr35.  Knocked out my power supply as well.  Sent power supply board and convergence board to PTS Electronics to be rebuilt.  Got them back and installed boards and tv powered up but convergence is off.  PTS says that convergence board needs to be manually adjusted that there is no service mode and can't be adjusted digitally through the remote.  Question...Do you have any insight where I can get the service code for this model?  The remote control model is ( RM-Y114A).  I am in denial that there is no service mode for this model.  Most Sony's from that era service code is "display", "5",  "channel +", "power" all pressed within 5 seconds and you're in.  Doesn't work for the xbr35.  I would hate to start to adjust convergence pots manually without some kind of procedure.    Any insight would be helpful. To do it manually....do I need some kind of monoscope image?  The cross hairs aren't enough to do the whole screen.

healy, What did the PTS rebuilds cost?  I think maybe my convergence board on my 53XBR35 needs repair.

Also were you able to align the convergence from the service mode and how is your 53 XBR functioning now.

healy55
JF,

JF,

It cost $195 + $19.63 shipping to get the power supply board and the convergence board rebuilt.  Just the convergence board to be rebuilt is about half that.  Call 1-800-844-7871 to get exact quote.  Their website is www.ptscorp.com

Power supply board was perfect but the convergence board was still messed up.  I sent it back.  They pay for shipping for the return under warranty.   6 weeks later i get it back and it was still messed up.  I sent it back again, free shipping of course.  4 weeks later I get it back and they found the problem.  An intermittent problem they claimed.  Bad soder joints and one bad chip.   They are slow so expect a month and they do honor their warranty.  Customer service is good.

The convergence board is bench tested at their facility so you have to redo all the convergence manually when you get it back.  I couldn't do it even with a service manual.   I sent it out to a t.v repair shop and for $100 they professionally alligned it all up and also I had them soder heat sinks to the new IC chips to keep them cool so they last another 10 years or so.

You do not need the service mode to manually allign the convergence pots.  Just cover the bulbs with a clean towel and do the green first.  Then the red and blue to match the green.  I tried using a DVD checkerboard still.  Their is a certain procedure that you must follow or it gets all screwed up.  PTS can fax you what you need to know,  they have the service manual.  Or if you have no patience like me send it out to a repair shop to get alligned.

Total cost $315.00 and 6 months later.  Picture looks great for non HD.   Good luck.

Great testimonial on your TV

Great testimonial on your TV set repair feats.  Thank you so much for that.  For any future peeps who want to repair thier own TV sets, call PTS FIRST to ask what to send in or to have fixed.

Thanks for the great info.  How did you know the power supply board was bad as well and needed to be sent in?

Did it actually take them a month to fix it the very first time or was that the overall time after all the ship backs?  Just curious as to how long it took for the first turnaround.

It took a month from when I shipped it out until I received it back.

I witnessed the meltdown of my TV.  First the convergence was off on the right side but snapping back and forth...normal to screwy....back and forth.  Then a 6 inch black bar on the bottom of the screen and shaky.  I turned t.v. off then on and that's when I lost the screen and the  power supply board sent a code to the on/off button (I think maybe 7 blinks).  I turned t.v. off and on again and only heard a clicking noise which I believe was a relay.  I turned it off and on again and then nothing....no clicks, no power, no codes.....dead.  This all happened in about 90 seconds.

I checked for fuses inside the t.v. all were ok.  Tested output voltage off the transformer and low voltage was reading 0 volts.  Shoulda been around 18 volts or 24 volts....I forget.   Anyway, I presumed the Convergence board flamed out...sent a power surge back to the power board and shorted out the transformer and /or other components on the power board.  Since both boards are modular I sent them out.   I'm no expert but it works now!

Larry,  Sorry for the long delay.

The model number of the set in question is KV27TS20.  It says is was manufactured in 1989.  If I could just get 'VIDEO' to stop blinking that would be great.

alandh,  this sounds like the

alandh,  this sounds like the problem Sony has with alot of their sets where the picture tube or the auto RBG circuit is defective, Thats the typical symptom. it may be able to be fixed by turning the screen control counter clock wise just a tiny bit.  The screen control is on the block that has a large red wire going up to the picture tube, but please be very careful, as there is alot of high voltage there!. You may also be able to get a repair guy to use  a CRT rejuvinatoron your set, as this might also stop this from happening, but when using a rejuvenator, there is always a risk that it will kill the piture tube.   Call around and see what the techs will charge you to clean the CRT not rejuvinate it. Now if that does not help, the picture tube will need to be replace, but im sure you wont want to replace a Picture tube with a cost of 300 bucks +. Good Luck and please let us know if you got it fixed or what you did

Hello Larry,

Hello Larry,

I thought my t.v repair adventure was over!  I posted before about my t.v. and what was wrong and how I fixed it.

I have a new problem with my 53" Sony XBR, KP53XBR35.   After getting the convergence board and power supply boards repaired and the convergence board professionally alligned the picture looked fine up until a week ago.  There are red lines (very dim) that go across the screen on any input setting.   You really notice them when the picture is dark and/or you're watching a dark movie like Aliens or The Crow.  The lines are there even when there is no signal.  Black screen with the lines.   Their are 12 lines  bowing up from  left to the right.   Video convergence looks great on aux, input 1, input 2.  Except for the red lines, which are fixed.  It's like they overlap a perfectly good picture.   Have you seen anything like that and where would you look first.     I appreciate your advice.

Ive been having trouble with

Ive been having trouble with my sony trinitron tv for a few weeks.

It kept blinking on and off repeatedly every second. I tried hooking it up to my vcr

to make my tv just a monitor, that didn't work... so I just gave it a few hard hits top right

on the screen and a few hits on the right side and the blinking stopped for now.

I dont know how long this will last but its working good for now.

Larry or anyone else,

Larry or anyone else,

Does anyone have the service manual for KP-53XBR35?

I think its the same as the KP-46XBR35 manual.

I found an electrician and he can read schematics and has a multi-meter, so I am going to attempt the repair with him.

What is the best place to buy the parts for a convergence repair?  I thought I saw a place selling a kit with genuine Sony parts and it included fuses, etc.  But I can't recall where I saw it.

Thanks, this is a very informative guide.  Is there any way you can maybe attach some pictures to the guide as this would make it even better.

For example, when you talk about the FlyBack, it would be much easier to follow your description along with a picture maybe with an arrow pointing to the part.

I will take some pictures as I go along and if you don't mind I could email them to you to add to the guide.  But I might need you help in helping me find that FlyBack connector without the manual :)

I was thinking of trying to get a manual here for a dontation vs paying $25 for it at other sites.  But I was wondering if this site is legit.  Can anyone comment on experiences with it?
