New Kodak Image Sensor Technology Coming Soon

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on June 16, 2007 1:26 AM

. Eastman Kodak Company just introduced a new advancement in image sensor technology that they say will help make dark, blurry digital photos a thing of the past. Here is what they say: Kodak’s new sensor technology provides a significant increase in sensitivity to light when compared to current sensor designs. With this new technology, users will realize a 2x to 4x increase in sensitivity (from one to two photographic stops), which will improve performance when taking pictures under low light and reduce motion blur when imaging moving subjects. In addition, this technology enables the design of smaller pixels (leading to higher resolutions in a given optical format) while retaining imaging performance. Today, the design of almost all color image sensors is based on the “Bayer Pattern,” an arrangement of red, green, and blue pixels that was first developed by Kodak Scientist Dr. Bryce Bayer in 1976. In this design,... More »

Want to beta test some super secret DivX stuff?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on June 6, 2007 7:27 PM

I saw DivX posted looking for beta testers for "super-secret stuff" this week. They are taking applications here. What I have heard is that DivX is working on a connected hardware platform in their connected home devices category. The PC to TV stuff. Like the SlingCatcher , Apple TV , Xbox 360 along with a few other streaming devices . At this time their are no reports of what this hardware is actually going to be capable of doing, but I like the proactive approach DivX is doing. They need to make sure more home media devices support their company's format because right now it is rarely found in US hardware. I personally use DivX occsiaonally and have thier software and codec on a couple of my machines. So I am looking forward to see what this may progress into. More »

There is a fundamental change occurring in the world of technology! This video from Popular Mechanics shows a new type of computer. They say it could be available to the public soon as next year. The idea is not that new, they have been working on this for a few years now. But it's getting closer and closer to becoming reality. If you could put this in you living room and have it also control your TV and audio system it would be pretty sweet! More »

Google Maps to your car's GPS Navigation System?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on May 11, 2007 12:53 AM

It looks like Google and their Maps program is getting a cool update. Well maybe..... They are testing out a service with BMW that allows you to send Google Maps info directly into your car's GPS In-Car navigation. They are promoting: No more having to write down the address and re-enter it in the car -- now you can just click and drive! We've partnered with BMW because they're a leading innovator in the automotive space, and they share our vision for a network-connected world. We've partnered with BMW because they're a leading innovator in the automotive space, and they share our vision for a network-connected world. It sounds and looks real cool, but I have to think about it in the real business world scenario. I seldom have the need to find an address online and then drive to it. Usually when I need to find a place, it's... More »

How do you become a Beta Tester for software or hardware?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 23, 2007 4:29 PM

The first question is "Why would anyone want to be a Beta tester?" The hardware or software has problems, and you have to spend time finding, reporting and resolving issues. Sometimes it takes a whole bunch of your time. It also takes away from your personal time, that and you can't make any real money doing it. Then, in most cases, you can't even tell anyone you are a tester. So why is it that when a company that puts out a beta test tons of people clamor to become testers? Most people do it because if, like me, you like to be on the cutting edge, or need a product that is new, you can (usually) get it for free, way ahead of the masses. A few examples are Windows Vista, the Drobo box and the Slingplayer for Palm. These products all did Beta testing before releasing them to... More »

Does your robot need a doctor?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 19, 2007 9:16 PM

Japan is years ahead of the U.S. in personalized robots in their homes. It seems that Japan has a thing for robots. Dozens of companies make and sell these humanoid machines. This has lead to the creation of the first robot hospital in Osaka. The Akazawa Roboclinic The hospital was launched by machinery maker Systec Akazawa. They offer diagnosis and treatment for down-and-out droids. They have all the proper signs for their different departments, including examination, operating and rehabilitation rooms. They only have a staff of four, But everyone including the hospital chief Dr. Ohno, are decked out in white lab coats. Most robot manufacturers are too small to offer tech support. So Ohno and his team of droid doctors take care of things for them. Most owners in Japan consider their robots family members. " Japanese people don't want their robots repaired , they want them treated. " I... More »

Security for Swiping Cell Phones a good deal?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 18, 2007 9:22 PM

The Japanese have been using cell phones for a couple years now that allow consumers to purchase any number of goods. They do this by simply swiping their phone instead of a credit card. Cell phones embedded with smart cards are placed near a touch pad reader. This enables it to perform the function of a credit card. Nothing new really. But what has happened is it has caused a problem with Cell Phone Stealing. If you get access to someone's cell phone you can easily buy whatever you want by simply swiping their phone. This has lead to other inventions to prevent this and several companies are coming up with ways to prevent this. LG Telecom has a biometric cell phone which features a fingerprint sensor. With the simple swipe of a finger, the sensor quickly identifies and enables authorized users to access the phone's full capabilities - while... More »

Hear what you have been missing.

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 16, 2007 9:40 PM

NPR ran a story this morning about the comeback of vinyl . CD sales are declining, but there has been a resurgence in vinyl. Audiophiles are drawn to records because there aren't any anti-piracy restrictions and people claim they just sound better than their digital counterparts Apparently sales of new vinyl records are up about 10%. Sales will approach a million this year. CD's will probably be about half a billion. They mention the popularity of a turntable with a USB interface and speculated on other possible reasons for the resurgence. They do mention sound quality and lack of DRM as possible causes. But sound quality can and will be debated. Unfortunately most people have not heard a true analog recording. I am talking about an analog source, going through an analog receiver or amplifier. Personally I have listened to both. I must say that true analog is better than... More »

Test scores not higher for students

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 7, 2007 9:04 PM

I realize this is not a new gadget and has nothing to do with emerging technology. But I thought this was very interesting. I have always considered computer software for education as a great break through and would improve any students knowledge and test scores. But I could have been wrong... According to this new report software used by elementary and high school children doesn't appear to improve test scores for reading and mathematics. This is despite the huge sums of money school districts spend on computer products. The The National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance produced a major study of the effectiveness of education and technology. They tested thirty-three districts, 132 schools, and 439 teachers participated in the study. Sixteen software products were selected for the study based on public submissions and ratings by a study team and expert review panels. They examined reading products used by... More »

Help customize your own community site

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 4, 2007 11:43 PM

I blog on new and interesting things in the technology world. But I would be remiss in not talking about this site you are on right now. The setup they use is, IMHO, one of the more advanced places where you can interact with others and gain information. On this site there is alot of talk about new gadgets and toys. There is also tons of questions and good answers. But, wouldn't it be sweet if you could go to a community site, find articles, blogs and forums that not only have items you like to read, but also has articles and blogs that pertain to what you want to see, not what the site's author's or advertisers want you to read? Then put these importamt articles on the front page. Not buried under a ton of uninteresting stuff. Well believe it or not, you have found the place right... More »

Check out Drobo

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on April 4, 2007 12:17 AM

Although I have not had a chance (yet) to run it through it's paces it looks like Drobo "The World's First Storage Robot" is going to make things a lot easier for me and everyone to manage your storage. Here are a few bullet points that make it attractive: Fully automated storage you don't have to manage. Drobo guards everything on it. Drobo combines up to four hard drives into a big pool of protected storage. Drobo upgrades capacity on-the-fly. Add drives to Drobo at any time. Drobo works the way you do. Drobo lets you "pay as you grow" No RAID levels. No management or configuration. Drobo does everything for you. Get rid of multiple external drives. Avoid the complexity of RAID. Attach a Drobo storage robot to your system and let it manage your storage so you don't have to. Drobo is the world's first storage robot, providing... More »

It's official the new Xbox 360 Elite will come with HDMI

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on March 28, 2007 11:03 PM

According to PCWorld rumors can now be put to rest: Microsoft just officially announced the impending release of its Xbox 360 refresh. The new model, due to hit stores on April 29 at a price of $480, boosts hard drive capacity from 20GB to 120GB; and adds an HDMI interface, the optimal interconnect for high-definition video playback. The Xbox 360 Elite will support playback at up to 1080p resolution. You can read more here . I have been waiting for this box. I am still running the original Xbox and have been planning to upgrade once Halo 3 is out. But interestingly the new model doesn't integrate a next-gen optical drive for playing packaged high-definition Hollywood movies; Microsoft will instead continue to offer its kludgy HD DVD Player add-on. So it looks like the waiting game is still on. I have time before Halo 3 is out and who knows,... More »

Control your Computer with just your eyes

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on March 23, 2007 9:49 PM

A new system is being developed by a Japan ese professor where PC users can input text simply by looking at an on-screen keyboard. Professor Arai Kohei of Saga University's Faculty of Science and Engineering has developed this system. When the you gaze at a character for one second, the system inputs the appropriate character. It does this by using a miniature camera, detecting your line of sight and then inputting the character you are looking at. The system is called Mitsumeru Dake in Japanese, which means "Just Look." Professor Arai says the system will be useful to people with disabilities or for medical and social-welfare applications. A lot of people with disabilities are unable to use personal computers unless they have expensive special equipment. In his system, a miniature camera attached to the computer notes the positions of three points for each eye: the inner corner of the eye,... More »

Blu-Ray Foresees Victory in DVD Format War?

Posted to blog Regarding New Technology on March 18, 2007 9:49 PM

A few weeks ago I posted on my Blog that the Adult Industry May Decide DVD Format War It sounds like the Adult industry could quite possibly be the deciding factor in the DVD format war. Most likely which way they go the DVD format will go. Check out these articles: FOXNews.com - Porn Industry May Decide DVD Format War New details on the Blu-ray porn ban, HD-DVD’s support, and the future of adult entertainment. HD-Blu Ray on CNET Sony denies preventing porn on Blu-Ray But now Frank Simonis, the European chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association has publically said "Within three years it will just be Blu-Ray." From what I understand the adult industry is embracing HD DVD. If you didn't know it, the adult industry outsells Hollywood by about 3 billion dollars a year in annual sales, rentals, and cable charges. There are several large firms already stating... More »
