How Do I Enter Those Special Characters?

Posted to blog Lurker at the Threshold on August 31, 2007 8:08 AM

I found this out a few months ago—how to enter special characters into a document. I was using a form program called "PureEdge," and I needed to insert an em dash (—). Since I had Adobe InDesign handy, I just used the glyph menu and copied one from InDesign and pasted it into PureEdge. Sure, that worked for me, but not everyone has InDesign handy, and it takes much longer that way. A little Googling yielded the answer—ALT+0151 on the numeric keypad. As I found out, ALT+four digits on the keypad is how any special characters are entered (without some sort of character menu). Here is a list of all of them. More »

Interview with an Xbox Controller Modder

Posted to blog Lurker at the Threshold on August 30, 2007 10:28 PM

I recently got an Xbox 360. The problem I had was there wasn’t a 360 equivalent of the Gamester FPS Master controller, which has the A, B, X, and Y buttons on the handles, so moving and jumping, reloading, etc. at the same time were very easy (on my original Xbox). I also used a Radica Phoenix Revolution PS2 controller (with an adapter) for my original Xbox; that controller allowed me to move the sticks, buttons, and D-pad around as desired, which I needed for games such as Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (lacks a southpaw setting, which I prefer even though I’m not a lefty). My solution? I had “RDC” from the Xbox-Scene community modify a Phoenix Revolution controller for me (he added A, B, X, and Y buttons to the handles). I used an XFPS 360 adapter to connect the Phoenix to the 360. He... More »

Extend Your Gaming Console (or Anything Else Ethernet)

Posted to blog Lurker at the Threshold on August 30, 2007 9:39 PM

I hadn't heard of this device until recently, so I bought one to try it out—the Logitech Xbox Play Link . It is a discontinued item, but it can be easily found [new] on eBay (got mine for under $30 shipped). Setup is painless—connect one module to a router (or modem) and the other to the ethernet device you want to extend. It is rated at 1.5Mb, but in performance tests I got about half that. Note that it uses RF and not Wi-Fi, so there is absolutely no configuration required. This device will work with an Xbox (go figure), a computer, Vonage box, or whatever. More »

LG VX-8300 Hacks

Posted to blog Lurker at the Threshold on August 30, 2007 9:32 PM

I did a bit a research before I decided on my free upgrade phone from Verizon—the LG VX-8300. Why? It plays mp3's and wma's (just drag them into my_music on a Micro-SD card). It plays videos (use a free converter and place them into my_flix). You can add ringtones for free, either my e-mailing mp3's to yournumber@vzwpix.com, or by using a 99-cent USB cable and BitPim (instructions are on the BitPim site). You can sync various calendar types (Outlook, iCal, Google Calendar) using BitPim. You can change a text file on the phone to enable free internet access (requires BitPim and a Hex editor ). I set up my own WAP using HoTTProxy . More information on hacking the VX-8300 can be found here . I bought a USB cable, a car charger, an extra wall charger, and an extra battery on eBay for around $9. More »
