Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes
Categories: Televisions and Projectors
Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it. Read on to learn what these diagnostic codes mean, and how you can use that information to get up and running again.

My Sony Trinitron, model : KV-32S42 chassis: AA-2D is having a problem lately, the picture will not display but the sound works fine. The power light will blink continuously or not light up at all. I attempted a fix by removing the power supply board and resoldered IC's but when I turn on the TV, the power light is doing the same thing, blinking continously without pauses or not blinking at all and also not lighting up and with no picture display and with sound only working. Sometimes if I attempt to power off and restart the picture display will come on with sound. Sometimes not. Seems to be intermittent. Sometimes the TV will work fine but then the picture will start to shrink and from the center of the screen disappear off again with sound only working. The TV seems to work better if started after the power had been disconnected for a long time. Any ideas what else to do on this TV to try to get it working normal?
So I have a Sony KV-36fs12 and I got it from a friend for free a few years ago. Its been great, I love it. About 2 years ago I got a flashing trouble light on the front 5 flashes, But everything looked and worked fine so I never did anything with it. If it ain't broke dont...... well Now it is. I have about 36ish horizantal lines accross the screen that are about 1"ish tall. They alternate from dake line to light to dark to light. All I need now is lines going the other way and I would have a giant checker board....lol Now on bright shows you cant really tell, but on darker shows you can see them very well. Also noticed the other day that when I put a dvd in my dvd player I would get a line that ran vertical and slowly moved from one side of the tv set to the other. But that is only on my dvd player. I have not tried differant cords or even differant inputs yet but I have a feeling that they are probably all related. If someone could please help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Im not afraid to get elbow deep and break out my soldering iron either.
5 flashes is telling you that the tv could not achieve white balance. It may even start to flash the picture on and off. The lines you are seeing are called retrace lines they are horizontal and slightly slanted. This is the beam homing pulse to send the beam back to the top of the screen. Normally this beam landing cannot be seen because the drive is turned down as low as it can be. When your tv attempts to fix the white balance it adjusts the cathode current until a white balance is achieved. If it needs to over compensate the retrace lines can be seen.
Why is this happening ? -- Well the 5 blink white balance error is telling you that one of the three guns (red, green, blue) is not emitting enough current. Normally this means the picture tube is going bad. 5 blinks tells me that and for me if it was in my shop i would test the crt to make sure it is going bad.
I bet your picture has a red green or bluish tent to it even on the black scenes along with the retrace lines. You picture tube is extremely bad and cannot be producing a very good picture at this point.
I have had customers complain about this before and they say that the picture looks fine. But in actuality i believe that since this is such a gradual thing that people get used to the picture degradation and don't notice it. Put a good tv next to it and you will see a big difference.
Bottom line ... time for a new tv.
I don't know man. The picture looks great. No crazy colors to it. It's real car and the color looks perfect. Is there some capacitors, or something I can replace...lol I hate to go out and buy a new tv because I just don't care for the new flat screens that much.
I am having sony trinitron. When put on there are two blinks and hissing sound for 5-6 minutes after that black and white image appears and then everything is ok.The time of pic coming ok depends on ambient temp.what may be the problem.
I have a sony trinton kv32fs100 i have sound but no picture. Picture comes on and off the red light blinks 5 times. Is it worth getting fixed its 8 years old. Thanks for ur help
I have a 13 month old Sony KDL-40EX500 flat panel LCD that is malfunctioning (doing the 6 red blinks) It try to start up, the start up noise sounds but then it goes black and keeps doing that start up over and over until i shut the tv off (then the 6 blinks start.) I have the back off already, what do I need to fix?
the 6 red blinks you are seeing, is not the same as the ones discussed in this forum. Flat panel tv's have a totally different blink code. I am not familiar with that pattern on that tv. But i can look it up when i get to work on Monday.
just put a reminder post in here and i will see it to remind me to look it up.
Im having problems with my Sony WEGA, when I turn it on all I hear is Audio but no picture then it turns off automatically in a couple of seconds. I counted how many times the red light blinks where it says "Stand By/Timer" it was Six times.
Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
What does this mean? Do i have to open my tv to fix the problem? I dont know what to do someone please help me :(
travisD that is a back light failure. It could be the mt board but it is more likely a panel problem.
One test - do the backlights flick on for a moment then go off when you first turn it on? - if so then it is a backlight problem in the panel, if not then it could be the mt board.
one or more of the backlights have failed. The backlights are not replicable by sony, the whole panel is bad. Although if you are adventuresome you could look into replacing the defective bulb. this is not a practical approach and the panel is easy to destroy in the process. You can get replacement bulbs from a usa manufacturer that is trying to make these bulbs. But I have found that they are the wrong color of white. But if you place the new bulb in the top or bottom socket and move one of the end bulbs to the burnt out oneĆ?'s location it is an acceptable picture.
Ccflwharehouse.com makes them.
leonel6 - your problem is on the circuit board and it will need repaired. if you are unfamilure with this, i suggest you take it to a pro.
Hi.. I have a Sony KDL 52w3000. A few weeks back my tv stopped working due to unstable electric current (most probably a power surge). The standby indicator started blinking 3 times intermittently (according to the guide a power supply problem, so far it adds up). I had it checked and the problem seems to be in the power supply panel G2 and the sub panel DF5 (both have transistors blown Q6100 on G2 and Q6406 and 407 on DF5). I have downloaded the service manual and tried to do self diagnostics test. The set seems to respond (light blinks green and seems to respond) but nothing comes on the screen. What does that mean? I am afraid it could be the LCD panel itself. I have now ordered parts from ebay (both power supply G2 and sub panels DF4 and DF5 and hope it would spring back to life if I replace them. Any suggestions on what else i can do?
PS the set was bought in Germany with its power supply 220v while the new parts ordered on ebay are from North American sets (but according to the specs of the models sold in America the power supply is 110-220 so that should not be a problem I hope).
Any light you can shed on this would be really appreciated.

My KDL55HX820 shut itself off and will not power back up. Red light on the front blinks in groups of two. What does this code mean?

Have a Sony KDF-e42A10. The screen is going off and the standby/power light is blinking 47-48 times. Comes back on for appox. a minute or less, then goes back to blinking 47-48 times again. Is this something worth looking into further, or is it time to buy a new tv? I've been trying to search for answers, but haven't seen what the exact problem is. Thank you in advance.
your bulb is going out, also you might want a technician to clean the fans on the inside.
Don't be surprised if you see color blotches after you replace the bulb. This will be dust in the optical block. not too much you can do about that.
I have a Sony KDL-52W4100. When you plug it in the wall socket it turns on, screen lights up for about 10-15 seconds, then shuts down with a repeatative blinking code of 14 blinks. I have read that it might be the T-con board. Can anyone confirm that or provide more diagnostic informaation. Thanks
Looking to get a sony projection TV in my area. I have been told it has a code 2 fault. Does the OCP circuit apply in projection TV's? Could this be a sign that a fuse blew on the power supply?
