How do I Delete Songs from an MP3 Player?

[article image]

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

My daughter has an RCA Lyra MP3 player model number RD1028A. We downloaded sample songs just to try it out, but now we do not know how to delete the files. Can you tell me how to delete them?

-submitted by Stacie

Answer:

Your RCA Lyra MP3 player is a Flash-based MP3 player. That means that it has a small amount of built-in memory inside the player as well as an SD expansion slot for storing songs. When the player is connected, songs may be stored in either of these two places.

Since you just opened your MP3 player and the player doesn't come with an SD card, you probably stored your songs on the internal memory. In either case, there are two basic ways to delete songs off of your player. You can use MP3 software (such as MusicMatch) to do this or just do it by hand.

I'm guessing that you probably originally put the songs on your player by hand (even if you didn't, this way will still work). To delete the files, follow the same process but delete the files instead of adding them. Assuming that you are using Microsoft Windows, click on "My Computer" and find the drive that is labeled "Removable Disk" and click on it. Look for a songs folder and continue to drill down folder by folder until you see your songs show up in the list. Highlight the songs that you want to delete (or the whole folder) and hit the delete button on your computer. Simple as that.

If you can't find your MP3 player on your computer, try reading this article for additional help. If you are still having problems, add a discussion to this article below and we'll be happy to help you out!

Let me make sure I understand the question.  Are you trying to just delete the songs off of the MP3 player, or just transfer the songs from the player back to your computer?

We are trying to delete the songs from the MP3 player. I have actually just gotten off the phone with San Disk tech support. It took about 30 minutes but they walked me through it. It was pretty technical, for me anyway. There are several steps and I don't think I should even attempt to try to explain to someone else because I don't think I could even do it again on my on. One of the main changes I had to make was this: When you turn the MP3 player on go to the menu, settings, scroll down to USB, click the start button and make sure that "auto detect" is checked. Then there are other changes I had to make when I connected it to my computer but I can't remember the procedure for that. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Here's some useful videos that you can see if they help too:

I have a m230 and these answers arent working for me.

Through Explorer I click on the sandisk drive. All hidden files are already showing. There are 3 folder: Audible, Config, Record, and one file SYS_CONF.DNC.  There are no files or folders under any of the folders.

I tried doing in through Media Player and it says no files to play. However, when you turn on the player, 19 songs are there. There is no way to delete them.

I watched the videos but that didnt help either.

Im on ubuntu fiesty so I logged in sudo and displayed hidden files and there was a hidden .trash so I deleted that but still, those songs remain.

Scratch that. I finally got it. Reformat the drive.

I checked that by putting files on the drive, then removed the drive from the computer, then attached again and tried to remove the files. Cant do it. Apparently the only reliable way (for me at least) to remove the stupid files is to reformat.

I have an RCA FLASH MP3 player to TC1000.   I connect it to my USB port but for some reason it won't let me delete any songs.  I have a feeling there is a setting on the MP3 player itself that prevents them being deleted....HELP!!!!
